Description

Benzyl Isovalerate is a fruity ester with a distinctive powerful apple-like, sweet and floral character. It is a colorless liquid and is used in both fragrance and flavor applications. Its odor is commonly described as fruity, apple-like, heavy floral and slightly tropical.

In perfumery, Benzyl Isovalerate is useful for creating fruity-floral, apple, tropical and oriental effects. It can add juicy fruitiness while retaining a soft floral character, making it useful in rose bases, heavy blossom compositions and selected oriental fragrances. It is also described as somewhat fresher and more floral than Benzyl Valerate.

The material works particularly well as a supporting fruity ingredient rather than as a standalone fragrance note. Its broad fruity character can help connect apple, apricot, pineapple, cherry and other fruit facets with floral and balsamic materials. It has also been used in tobacco-style fragrance and flavor compositions.

Perfumers' Tip

Benzyl Isovalerate is especially useful for adding a juicy apple-fruity character with a soft floral background. Start with a dilution and build gradually to prevent the fruity note from becoming overly heavy.

For an apple or tropical accord, combine it with Fructone, Hexyl Acetate and other fruity esters. For a richer floral effect, pair it with benzyl salicylate, Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol and Hedione.
