Description

Guaiacol is a naturally occurring phenolic aroma compound with a distinctive smoky, woody, phenolic and medicinal character. It is one of the important odor compounds associated with smoke and roasted materials. At higher concentrations, its profile can become sharp, tar-like and medicinal, while very small amounts can provide depth and realism to smoky compositions.

In perfumery, Guaiacol is primarily used as a powerful modifier in smoky, woody, leathery, tobacco and dark accords. It can introduce a roasted or burnt facet and is particularly useful when creating realistic smoke effects. It can also add complexity to woody compositions and help reinforce natural smoky nuances in certain fragrance styles.

Because of its very strong odor, Guaiacol should generally be handled in dilution and introduced carefully into a formula.

Perfumers' Tip

Guaiacol is a very powerful smoky modifier, so work from a highly diluted solution. A tiny amount can add convincing smoke and roasted depth to a woody or tobacco accord, while too much can quickly make the fragrance harsh, medicinal or tar-like.
