Description

Methyl Abietate is the methyl ester of abietic acid and belongs to the abietate family of resin-derived materials. It is associated with a warm, woody, resinous and balsamic character, with subtle pine-like nuances. Its high molecular weight and low volatility make it useful in fragrance structures where depth, body and persistence are desired.

In perfumery, Methyl Abietate is particularly useful as an oriental thickener, base-note modifier and fixative-type material. It can give heavy oriental and woody compositions additional richness and substance while helping round out sharper or lighter materials. Its resinous character makes it suitable for amber, balsamic, woody and incense-inspired accords. It is best considered a structural material rather than a highly diffusive top-note ingredient.
