Description
Veratraldehyde, also known as Methyl Vanillin and Veratryl Aldehyde, is a versatile aromatic aldehyde with a warm, sweet and sophisticated odor profile. It combines vanilla-like, balsamic, powdery, floral and slightly woody facets, making it a useful ingredient for sweet and elegant fragrance compositions.
It is structurally related to Vanillin, but the replacement of Vanillin's phenolic hydroxyl group with a methoxy group gives Veratraldehyde a somewhat drier, softer and less intensely sweet character.
In perfumery, Veratraldehyde is particularly useful in vanilla, floral, oriental, balsamic, powdery and gourmand compositions. It can also add warmth and refinement to floral accords and help create a smooth transition into the base.

Perfumers' Tip
Veratraldehyde is useful for creating a soft, warm and sophisticated vanilla-balsamic effect. Combine it with Vanillin for a fuller vanilla accord, or with Heliotropin and Coumarin for a powdery, almond-like gourmand character.
For a rich oriental base, pair it with Benzoin, Labdanum, Sandalwood and Ambroxan. In floral compositions, Phenethyl Alcohol and Hedione can help integrate its sweet aromatic character without making the fragrance overly heavy.
Important nomenclature note: Veratraldehyde (CAS 120-14-9) is also known as 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde and is commonly referred to as Methyl Vanillin. “Veratryl Aldehyde” is another name used for the same material. Do not confuse it with Vanillin, which has a different chemical structure and CAS number.
