Description

3-Propyl Phenol is a highly characterful phenolic aroma chemical with a dark, woody, animalic and oud-like odor profile. It is also known as 3-n-propylphenol, m-propylphenol and 1-hydroxy-3-n-propylbenzene. The material has the molecular formula C₉H₁₂O and a molecular weight of approximately 136.19.

In perfumery, 3-Propyl Phenol is valued for its ability to introduce a dark phenolic, smoky, woody and animalic dimension into a composition. It can be particularly interesting in oud, oriental, leather, smoky wood and animalic accords. Commercial fragrance suppliers describe it as an intense oud-type material with phenolic aspects, making it useful when a composition needs a distinctive dark or aged-wood character.

Because of its strong personality, it is best approached as a high-impact modifier rather than a bulk fragrance ingredient. Used carefully, it can add depth and contrast to sweeter woody materials, resins and oriental accords.

Perfumers' Tip

3-Propyl Phenol is a very strong character material, so start with a dilution and evaluate it in the complete accord rather than judging only at high concentration. Tiny amounts can introduce a noticeable dark phenolic and oud-like effect.

Try combining it with cypriol, patchouli, labdanum and woody materials for an oriental oud direction, or contrast it with sweet vanillic materials to soften its darker character.
