Description

4-Vinyl Guaiacol is a distinctive phenolic aroma chemical with a powerful spicy, smoky, clove-like and warm character. Chemically known as 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, it is a naturally occurring guaiacol derivative that has been identified in several natural sources and is particularly associated with clove-like and smoky aromatic impressions.

In perfumery, 4-Vinyl Guaiacol is valued for adding warmth, spice, smokiness and phenolic depth. Its odor profile can range from clove and sweet spice to smoky, balsamic and slightly tarry nuances. This makes it useful for creating dark woody, spicy, tobacco, roasted, gourmand and smoky effects. Research on guaiacol derivatives also confirms characteristic smoky, sweet/vanilla-like and clove-like odor impressions for this family of materials.

Because of its strong olfactory personality, 4-Vinyl Guaiacol is generally best treated as a powerful modifier. Small quantities can significantly change the character of an accord, particularly when combined with vanillic, woody, tobacco, leather or spicy materials.

Perfumers' Tip

Use 4-Vinyl Guaiacol carefully when building clove, smoky wood, tobacco or warm gourmand accords. Start with a diluted solution because its phenolic character can quickly dominate a formula.

For a smoother effect, pair it with vanillin, tonka, woods or balsamic materials. For a darker composition, combine it with patchouli, labdanum, guaiacol or smoky materials.
