Description

Alcohol C9 is the perfumery name commonly used for 1-Nonanol, a straight-chain C9 fatty alcohol also known as Nonyl Alcohol or Pelargonic Alcohol. It is a colorless liquid with a distinctive rose, orange, fresh-citrus and fatty-waxy character. Reliable chemical references describe its odor as rose-like or fruity, while fragrance references emphasize its rose-orange and fatty-floral character.

In perfumery, Alcohol C9 is useful as a naturalistic floral-citrus and fatty modifier. It can add freshness and realism to rose and orange accords while introducing a subtle waxy, oily dimension. This makes it particularly useful in floral, citrus, fruity and green compositions where a slightly fatty natural character is desirable.

Alcohol C9 can also be useful when constructing accords that imitate aspects of natural citrus oils, fruits and floral materials. It occurs naturally in various essential oils and plant-derived volatile profiles, including citrus materials.

Because its character becomes more noticeably fatty and waxy as concentration increases, it is generally best evaluated from a dilution. It can be especially effective as part of a rose-orange accord, where it helps connect fresh citrus notes with floral and waxy facets.

Perfumers' Tip

Use Alcohol C9 to give rose and citrus accords a more natural fatty-floral texture. It works particularly well when a fresh composition feels too clean or synthetic and needs a subtle waxy dimension.

For a natural citrus-floral effect, try combining it with citronellol, geraniol, linalool and orange or bergamot materials. Start low and increase gradually to control its fatty character.
