Description

Aldehyde C20, commonly known as Raspberry Aldehyde, is a distinctive fruity aroma chemical with a characteristic raspberry, red-fruit and rosy-violet profile. Despite its traditional perfumery name, it is not a true aldehyde chemically; it belongs to the glycidic ester family. This historical "aldehyde" naming convention is also seen with several other classic fruity materials.

In perfumery, Aldehyde C20 is valued for creating raspberry, red-fruit, tutti-frutti and fruity-floral effects. It can bring a juicy, sweet berry character to a composition while adding subtle rosy and violet nuances. ScenTree notes its usefulness in fruity, tutti-frutti, red-fruit, banana, ambery and chypre compositions, as well as for modifying rose, orris and violet accords.

It is particularly useful when constructing raspberry accords, fruity-floral perfumes, modern attars and sweet oriental compositions. Aldehyde C20 is a strong character material, so careful dosing is important. Compared with Aldehyde C16, its profile is generally more raspberry/red-fruit oriented, while C16 is more strongly associated with strawberry.

Perfumers' Tip

Use Aldehyde C20 to give a fragrance a recognizable raspberry and red-fruit signature. For a more realistic berry effect, combine it with raspberry ketone, ionones and soft floral materials rather than relying on C20 alone.

For a sweeter gourmand direction, pair it with vanillin, ethyl maltol and fruity materials. For a sophisticated fruity-floral accord, combine it with rose, violet, ionones and Hedione. Start from a dilution and increase gradually to control its strong fruity character.
