Description

Aldehyde C8, commonly known as Octanal, is a classic aliphatic aldehyde with a powerful fresh citrus, orange-peel, fruity and slightly waxy character. It is naturally present in a number of citrus oils and is widely used in perfumery and flavor applications.

In fragrance construction, Aldehyde C8 is primarily used as a high-impact top-note accent. It provides freshness, brightness and lift to citrus compositions and can help make orange, lemon and bergamot accords feel more vivid. It also works well in floral and aldehydic compositions, where its slightly fatty and waxy character can add texture and realism. Kao Chemicals specifically describes C8 as a fresh citrus top-note material with strong diffusion, clarity and lift.

Aldehyde C8 is powerful and should normally be evaluated from a dilution. At very low levels it can add sparkle and freshness, while excessive use may emphasize its sharper, fatty or waxy facets. This makes it an excellent material for learning how small quantities of aliphatic aldehydes can transform the opening of a fragrance.

Perfumers' Tip

Aldehyde C8 is best used from a low-percentage working dilution. A small amount can give an orange-citrus accord extra sparkle and natural lift, while too much can quickly become sharp or fatty.

For a classic aldehydic effect, combine it with C9, C10, C11 and C12 aldehydes. For a natural citrus opening, pair it with bergamot, orange, lemon, linalool and citral.
