Description

Aldehyde C9, commonly known as Nonanal, is a classic aliphatic aldehyde with a distinctive fresh citrus, orange, rose, green and waxy-floral character. It is naturally found in a number of essential oils, including rose and citrus materials, and is widely used as a fragrance ingredient.

In perfumery, Aldehyde C9 is valued as a high-impact accent material for adding brightness, freshness and diffusion. Kao describes it as providing a waxy floral nuance to the top note, with strong diffusion that contributes clarity and lift. It is particularly useful in citrus and floral compositions, where it can enhance orange, rose and fresh-green effects.

Aldehyde C9 is especially useful in aldehydic florals, citrus accords, rose compositions, clean fragrances and fresh natural-style accords. At higher levels its citrus and rose character becomes more apparent, while very small amounts can add bloom and lift without making the aldehydic character obvious. Because of its strength, it is best evaluated from a working dilution.

Perfumers' Tip

Aldehyde C9 is an excellent material for giving a rose or citrus accord extra bloom and diffusion. Start with a low-percentage dilution and increase gradually because its waxy-aldehydic character can quickly dominate a delicate composition.

For a classic aldehydic effect, combine it with C8, C10, C11 and C12 aldehydes. For a more natural rose-citrus effect, pair it with citronellol, geraniol, linalool, bergamot and sweet orange materials.
