Description

Alpha Ionone is a classic violet-type aroma chemical with a warm, woody, powdery and floral character. Its odor is strongly reminiscent of violet, with additional sweet, fruity and balsamic nuances that give it considerable versatility in fragrance construction.

In perfumery, Alpha Ionone is widely used to create and support violet, iris, orris, rose and powdery floral accords. It can add a soft floral body while also contributing a smooth woody character. Its fruity and berry-like facets can be especially useful for giving floral compositions greater naturalistic complexity.

Alpha Ionone also performs well in woody, amber, balsamic and cosmetic-style fragrances. It has good substantivity, making it useful when a perfumer wants the violet character to remain noticeable into the later stages of the fragrance.

Perfumers' Tip

Alpha Ionone is an excellent starting material for building violet and powdery floral accords. Combine it with Hedione and floral alcohols for a more diffusive floral effect, or with woody materials for a smoother violet-wood character.

For a richer violet or iris impression, experiment with Beta Ionone, Methyl Ionone and orris-type materials while keeping Alpha Ionone as part of the floral backbone.
