Description

Ambroxan is one of the most important modern ambergris-type aroma chemicals, valued for its warm, dry, woody and subtly musky character. Its odor profile can include ambergris, sweet, dry, woody, labdanum and mineral-like facets, giving fragrances a smooth and radiant character. Ambroxan has a molecular formula of C₁₆H₂₈O and a molecular weight of approximately 236.40.

In perfumery, Ambroxan is used to create amber, woody, musky, marine and modern skin-scent effects. It can add diffusion and radiance while providing exceptional persistence in the drydown. Kao reports both strong diffusion and exceptional substantivity, with approximately one month of tenacity on a smelling strip.

Ambroxan is particularly useful as a base-note foundation and blending material. It can give fresh, floral and citrus compositions additional depth while connecting them to a smooth woody-amber drydown. It is equally effective in masculine, feminine and unisex fragrance styles.

Perfumers' Tip

Ambroxan is an excellent foundation for modern amber-woody fragrances. Evaluate it both immediately and after several hours, as its dry, radiant amber character becomes particularly important during the drydown.

For a transparent contemporary fragrance, combine it with Hedione and Iso E Super. For a richer amber base, pair it with labdanum, patchouli and other woody-amber materials. Kao lists a broad perfumery dosage range of 0.1–10%, depending on the desired effect.
