Description
Benzyl Acetone is a versatile floral-balsamic aroma chemical with a sweet, warm and aromatic character. Its odor profile combines jasmine-like floral facets with soft fruity, balsamic and slightly green nuances. It is also known as 4-Phenyl-2-butanone and has the molecular formula C₁₀H₁₂O.
In perfumery, Benzyl Acetone is particularly useful for creating floral, white-floral, fruity, honeyed and oriental effects. It can enrich jasmine and other floral accords while adding warmth and a subtle fruity character. It is also frequently used in oud-style compositions, where its floral-fruity character can soften and enrich darker woody materials.
Its relatively smooth and lasting character makes it useful as a bridge between floral heart materials and deeper base notes. It can also perform well in soap fragrances, where its somewhat sharper floral character can provide useful definition.

Perfumers' Tip
Benzyl Acetone is especially useful for adding floral richness and fruity warmth to oud accords. Start with a diluted solution and increase gradually until the desired floral-balsamic effect develops.
For a fuller jasmine accord, combine it with Benzyl Acetate, Phenethyl Alcohol and Hedione. For an oud direction, pair it with cypriol, patchouli, woody materials and Ambroxan to create contrast between floral softness and a darker base.
