Description
Benzyl Benzoate is a versatile fragrance fixative and solvent with a very faint, sweet and balsamic odor. Unlike strongly characterful aroma chemicals, its main value in perfumery is functional: it can help support the longevity of a composition and assist in dissolving difficult-to-handle fragrance materials. Its odor is generally described as soft, sweet and balsamic, with a subtle floral character.
In fragrance construction, Benzyl Benzoate is particularly useful in floral, oriental, woody, balsamic and attar compositions. It can help provide a smooth base for heavier materials and is useful for incorporating crystalline or resinous ingredients that have limited solubility in alcohol. It is also used as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetics and personal-care products.
Because its own odor is relatively restrained, Benzyl Benzoate is best understood as a supporting perfumery material rather than a dominant scent note. It is especially valuable in formulas containing resinoids, musks, vanillin-type materials and other less-soluble ingredients.

Perfumers' Tip
Benzyl Benzoate is particularly useful when you need a functional solvent and fixative for heavier fragrance materials. It can help smooth the handling of crystalline, resinous and poorly soluble ingredients while adding only a subtle balsamic character.
For a warm base, combine it with benzoin, vanillin, labdanum and musk materials. When using it primarily as a solvent or fixative, remember that its role is functional and should not be confused with that of a strongly odorous base-note material.
