Description

Benzyl Butyrate is an ester with a rich fruity-floral character, commonly described with plum, apricot, tropical, fresh and slightly waxy nuances. JECFA describes its odor as heavy fruity-floral and plum-like, while fragrance references also associate it with fresh fruity, jasmine, apricot and tropical facets.

In perfumery, Benzyl Butyrate is useful for creating fruity, floral and tropical effects while adding body and softness to the composition. Its plum-like character can be especially useful in dark-fruit accords, while its floral side helps it blend naturally with jasmine, rose and other floral materials. It can also contribute pineapple, apple and other fresh-fruity nuances depending on the surrounding formula.

Benzyl Butyrate is a versatile supporting material rather than an extremely sharp top-note ingredient. It can help connect fruity notes with floral and woody elements and is used in fine fragrances, toiletries, soaps and household fragrance products.

Perfumers' Tip

Benzyl Butyrate is particularly useful for giving a fruity accord a richer plum-apricot and tropical character. Try it alongside Benzyl Acetate when building a fuller fruity-floral structure.

For a tropical direction, combine it with Allyl Hexanoate and fruity esters. For a softer fruity-floral composition, pair it with Hedione, Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol and benzyl salicylate.
