Description

Benzyl Cinnamate is a solid cinnamate ester with a sweet, balsamic, warm, slightly floral and spicy character. It occurs naturally in materials such as Peru balsam, Tolu balsam, benzoin and copaiba balsam. In perfumery, it is particularly valued for its tenacity and its ability to support long-lasting fragrance compositions.

As a perfumery ingredient, Benzyl Cinnamate is used mainly as a fixative and base-note modifier. It is especially suitable for heavy oriental, amber, balsamic and spicy compositions, where it can help give the fragrance greater body and persistence. It also blends well with floral bases and powdery fragrance concepts.

The powder form is convenient for handling as a solid raw material. Because Benzyl Cinnamate has relatively low volatility compared with many top-note materials, it can contribute a lasting background to a perfume while allowing more volatile ingredients to remain prominent during the opening. It is therefore a useful material for building the foundation of rich, warm and elegant fragrance accords.

Perfumers' Tip

Benzyl Cinnamate is particularly useful when you want to add warmth, body and lasting balsamic depth to a fragrance. It works especially well in oriental, amber and spicy compositions.

For a rich powdery accord, combine it with vanillin, coumarin and benzyl salicylate. For a deeper balsamic base, pair it with benzoin, labdanum, patchouli and sandalwood materials. Because it is a solid, prepare a suitable dilution or solution before incorporating it into a perfume concentrate.
