Description

Benzyl Salicylate is a widely used salicylate ester with a soft, sweet, floral and mildly balsamic character. Its own odor can be quite faint, but it plays an important structural role in many fragrance compositions. Perfumery references describe it as a soft floral-balsamic material with a warm, slightly oily character.

In fragrance construction, Benzyl Salicylate is particularly valuable as a floral base and fixative. It is commonly associated with jasmine, ylang-ylang, carnation, lilac, frangipani and other white-floral compositions. It can help round sharp floral materials, provide body and slow the evaporation of more volatile ingredients.

Its low odor impact makes it especially useful as a background material rather than a dominant note. It can also contribute a subtle solar, creamy or sunscreen-like warmth in tropical and beach-inspired accords. Benzyl Salicylate is widely used in perfumes, soaps, shampoos, body care, candles and household fragrance products.

Perfumers' Tip

Benzyl Salicylate is excellent for rounding and extending floral accords without introducing a strongly recognizable odor of its own. It is particularly effective in white-floral and solar compositions.

Try combining it with Hedione, Benzyl Acetate and Ylang-Ylang for a fuller jasmine-style accord, or with sandalwood, vanillin and musks for a soft, warm base.
