Description
Beta Caryophyllene is a naturally occurring bicyclic sesquiterpene with a distinctive dry, woody, spicy and clove-like character. It is found naturally in materials such as black pepper, clove and copaiba oils. Its odor is commonly described as sweet woody-spicy, dry, dusty and clove-like, giving it a recognizable warm aromatic character.
In perfumery, Beta Caryophyllene is useful as a woody-spicy modifier and supporting base material. It can add warmth and dry spice to oriental, amber, woody, aromatic and fougère compositions. Its peppery and clove facets make it particularly useful when a fragrance needs natural-looking spice without becoming overly sweet. It can also help connect spicy heart materials with woody and resinous base notes.
Beta Caryophyllene is naturally present in numerous essential oils, making it valuable when constructing natural-style spice, pepper, clove and woody accords. Its relatively strong tenacity also allows it to remain noticeable into the later stages of a fragrance.

Perfumers' Tip
Beta Caryophyllene is excellent for adding a dry peppery-woody backbone to spicy compositions. Use it with clove, black pepper and nutmeg materials when you want a more natural spice effect.
For a deeper woody base, combine it with patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood and labdanum. For a brighter spicy accord, pair it with citrus materials and a controlled amount of eugenol or cinnamic aldehyde.
