In perfumery, Birch Tar Oil is primarily valued as a character material and modifier. A very small amount can introduce the impression of smoke, charred wood, leather or a campfire-like atmosphere. It can also add darkness and depth to woody and oriental compositions, helping create dramatic contrasts against floral, sweet or resinous notes.

Birch Tar Oil Pure is particularly useful in leather, smoky, woody, chypre and dark oriental accords.
