Description
Butyl Acetate is a volatile ester with a characteristic strong fruity, sweet and fresh odor, often associated with apple, pear and banana-like facets. It is a clear, colorless liquid and is widely recognized as a fruity aroma ingredient as well as a commonly used solvent. JECFA describes its odor as strongly fruity. (FAOHome)
In perfumery, Butyl Acetate can be used as a bright fruity modifier in compositions where a fresh, juicy and slightly solvent-like fruit character is desired. Its volatile nature makes it more appropriate for the opening of a fragrance rather than for providing lasting body. It can be useful in apple, pear, banana, tropical and general fruity accords.
Butyl Acetate is also encountered in flavor applications and formulation work because of its characteristic fruity odor. It should be distinguished from heavier fragrance esters because it evaporates relatively quickly and therefore contributes primarily to the initial fruity impression of a composition. (FAOHome)

Perfumers' Tip
Butyl Acetate is best used when a formula needs a bright, immediate fruity lift. Because it is highly volatile, evaluate it primarily during the opening stages of the fragrance.
For a more convincing fruity accord, combine it with Hexyl Acetate, Ethyl Butyrate, Fructone and lactones. For a greener fruit effect, a small amount of Aldehyde C6 or cis-3-Hexenyl Acetate can add freshness.
