Description

Camphene is a naturally occurring monoterpene with a distinctive fresh, woody, camphoraceous, herbal and slightly pine-like character. It is found in a variety of essential oils and is also produced commercially from terpene sources. JECFA describes its odor as mild and oil-camphoraceous, while perfumery references commonly associate it with woody, herbal, fir-needle and terpenic facets. (FAOHome)

In perfumery, Camphene is useful for creating fresh coniferous, pine, camphoraceous, herbal and woody effects. It can provide an energetic terpene lift to natural-style compositions and is particularly useful in pine, fir, forest and aromatic accords. Its dry character can also help add freshness to woody and balsamic fragrance structures.

Camphene is relatively volatile and therefore works mainly in the opening and early heart of a fragrance. It is best used as a supporting material alongside other terpenes and essential oils rather than as a dominant standalone note. Perfumers' Tip

Camphene works particularly well when you want to create a fresh pine or forest-like opening. Start from a dilution and combine it with other terpenic materials to achieve a more natural effect.

For a coniferous accord, pair it with alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, fir needle and cedarwood. For a more camphoraceous direction, combine it carefully with camphor, borneol and eucalyptus-type materials.
