Description
Carvacrol is a naturally occurring phenolic aroma chemical found in essential oils such as oregano and thyme. It has a powerful warm, pungent, spicy and herbal odor, strongly reminiscent of oregano and thyme. Its profile also includes sharp phenolic, slightly medicinal and woody nuances, giving it a distinctive and highly recognizable character.
In perfumery, Carvacrol is primarily used as a specialty herbal and spicy modifier. It can introduce an authentic oregano-thyme character into aromatic compositions and add sharpness, warmth and depth to herbal accords. It is particularly interesting in compositions built around thyme, oregano, savory, clove and other strongly aromatic materials.
Carvacrol is a strong character material and should generally be used carefully. A small amount can provide considerable aromatic impact, while excessive use may make a fragrance feel overly pungent, medicinal or phenolic. It is therefore especially useful for experienced perfumers working on herbal, aromatic, spicy, medicinal-style and functional fragrance concepts.

Perfumers' Tip
Carvacrol is best treated as a powerful accent material, not a bulk fragrance ingredient. Start from a low dilution and build gradually to avoid an excessively medicinal or pungent result.
For a realistic herbal accord, combine it with thymol, thyme, oregano and clove materials. For a darker aromatic composition, try pairing it with patchouli, vetiver, cedarwood and spicy materials.
Formulation note: Carvacrol has documented safety considerations for fragrance use, so always check the current supplier SDS and applicable regulatory requirements for the intended product category.
