Description

Cedrol Crystal is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alcohol associated with cedarwood oils and coniferous woods. It is supplied as a crystalline solid and has a characteristic dry, woody and cedarwood-like odor. Chemical references identify Cedrol as C₁₅H₂₆O with CAS 77-53-2, while fragrance references describe its characteristic cedarwood odor.

In perfumery, Cedrol is useful for creating natural woody, cedar, dry-wood and coniferous effects. It can add depth and structure to woody compositions without introducing an excessively sweet character. Its relatively subtle woody presence also makes it useful for supporting other woods and helping create a more natural, dimensional base.

Cedrol is particularly interesting in cedarwood, conifer, woody, aromatic and earthy compositions. It can be used alongside cedarwood oils and synthetic woody materials to reinforce a natural wood impression. It is also used as a fragrance ingredient in products such as cosmetics, shampoos, soaps, cleaners and detergents.

Because Cedrol Crystal is a solid, it should be dissolved appropriately before incorporation into a fragrance concentrate. Its melting point is around 86–87°C, so crystallization or solidification at ordinary storage temperatures can be expected.

Perfumers' Tip

Cedrol Crystal is useful when you want to give a woody composition a natural cedarwood foundation without adding a strongly projecting character. It works particularly well as part of a larger cedarwood accord rather than as a dominant note.

For a fuller woody effect, combine it with Cedryl Acetate, Cedarwood oils and Iso E Super. Adding vetiver, patchouli or frankincense can create a deeper, drier and more natural forest-like base.
