Description

Lyral is the trade name commonly associated with Hydroxyisohexyl 3-Cyclohexene Carboxaldehyde (HICC), a synthetic fragrance material known for its soft, delicate floral character. Its odor profile is strongly associated with muguet (lily-of-the-valley), cyclamen and lilac, with a smooth floral quality reminiscent of hydroxycitronellal. IFF describes Lyral as having notable tenacity and diffusivity, making it a powerful blending material throughout the drydown of a perfume.

Historically, Lyral was an important material for constructing classic muguet and floral fragrances. It can add floral volume, softness, diffusion and persistence while helping connect fresh floral notes with the deeper stages of a composition. However, Lyral has important regulatory and safety considerations: HICC has been identified as a contact allergen, and its use in cosmetics has been prohibited in the European Union since 2021. For this reason, formulators should verify the regulatory status and permitted use in their target market before considering it for any application.

Perfumers' Tip

Lyral is best understood as a powerful floral blender and muguet-building material, rather than simply a single-note floral ingredient. Historically, small amounts were useful for giving floral compositions greater body, diffusion and drydown continuity. For modern formulations, consider regulatory-compliant alternatives such as other muguet materials when developing products intended for regulated cosmetic markets.
