Description

Menthone is a characteristic minty aroma chemical with a fresh, cool, herbal and slightly woody odor profile. It occurs naturally in mint essential oils, including peppermint and corn mint, and is closely related to menthol, but its ketone structure gives it a somewhat drier and more aromatic character.

In perfumery, Menthone is valued for building and modifying mint, aromatic and refreshing accords. It can provide depth to peppermint compositions while helping balance the intense cooling character of menthol. It is also useful in lavender, geranium, rose and fougère compositions, where its fresh herbal character can add lift and definition.

Perfumers' Tip

Menthone works particularly well for creating a cool, natural mint effect with more aromatic depth than menthol alone. Pair it with Menthol for a fuller cooling impression, or combine it with L-Carvone and mint oils for a more realistic mint accord. Small amounts can also freshen lavender, geranium and fougère structures without making them overtly minty.
