Description

Methyl Anthranilate is a distinctive aroma chemical with a rich sweet, fruity and floral character, best known for its characteristic Concord grape impression. It also has prominent orange blossom and neroli facets, together with soft, slightly powdery and subtly musty nuances. It occurs naturally in several essential oils, including neroli, jasmine, ylang-ylang and bergamot, as well as in grapes.

In perfumery, Methyl Anthranilate is especially valuable for creating orange blossom, neroli, grape and exotic white-floral accords. It adds warmth, sweetness and volume to floral compositions and can bring a distinctive fruity character to otherwise purely floral structures. It is also an important building block for certain Schiff-base materials, including Aurantiol, which are widely used in perfumery.

Perfumers' Tip

Methyl Anthranilate is a strongly characterful material, so begin at a low level when building an accord. Pair it with Neroli and Petitgrain for a convincing orange-blossom effect, or combine it with fruity materials for a distinctive grape-fruity character. It can also add warmth and depth to jasmine and tuberose compositions.
