Description

Methyl Salicylate is an aromatic ester best known for its distinctive sweet, fresh wintergreen character. It has a recognizable minty quality accompanied by spicy, aromatic, balsamic and slightly phenolic nuances. The material is naturally associated with wintergreen and sweet birch, giving it a familiar cool and herbal character.

In perfumery, Methyl Salicylate is primarily used as a supporting and modifying material. It can add freshness, warmth and character to floral, herbal and aromatic compositions and is particularly useful in wintergreen, fougère and spicy-floral accords. It also works well in heavy floral compositions, including ylang-ylang, tuberose and other narcotic floral styles, where its sweet salicylate character can provide additional richness and complexity.

Perfumers' Tip

Methyl Salicylate is a strong character material, so start with a small amount and evaluate its effect on the complete accord. Pair it with Eugenol, Isoeugenol or other salicylates for warmth and spicy-floral depth, or combine it with mint materials for a recognizable wintergreen effect.
