Description
Peru Balsam is a rich natural balsamic material valued in perfumery for its warm, sweet, vanilla-like, resinous and softly spicy character. It is obtained from Myroxylon trees and is commonly used as a base note and natural fixative. Peru Balsam is typically a dark, viscous material with a balsamic aroma reminiscent of vanilla.
Its aroma combines vanilla, balsamic, resinous, cinnamon-like, woody, sweet and slightly earthy facets. Compared with Tolu Balsam, Peru Balsam generally has a darker, earthier character with a subtle bitter-green dimension.
Peru Balsam works especially well in amber, oriental, balsamic, vanilla, woody, spicy, gourmand, tobacco and leather fragrances. It can provide warmth and body to the base while helping softer floral and volatile notes remain perceptible for longer.

Perfumers' Tip
Peru Balsam is particularly useful for creating a warm, rich and softly sweet balsamic base. Combine it with Benzoin and Vanilla for a smooth gourmand-amber effect, or pair it with Labdanum and Olibanum for a deeper resinous accord.
For a warm oriental composition, try Peru Balsam + Labdanum + Benzoin + Vanilla + Sandalwood. Cinnamon and Cardamom can emphasize its spicy character, while Patchouli and Vetiver can provide dryness and contrast.
Peru Balsam can also beautifully support floral compositions. Try Peru Balsam + Rose + Jasmine + Ylang Ylang + Vanilla for a warm floral-balsamic direction.
Because natural Peru Balsam is dark, rich and highly tenacious, use it carefully when working with light-colored or delicate compositions. Its dark color and limited solubility can also make raw balsam less convenient than processed or resin-free preparations in some perfume formulas.
Note: Peru Balsam is known to contain sensitizing constituents, so commercial skin-use formulations should always be evaluated against the applicable current safety and regulatory requirements.
