Description

Skatole is a highly powerful indolic aroma chemical with an unusual and complex odor profile. In concentrated form, it has strong fecal, animalic and unpleasant nuances, but when used in extremely small quantities, it can contribute a surprisingly rich, warm and floral character to perfumes.

In natural perfumery, indolic materials are important because many beautiful white flowers naturally contain small amounts of indolic compounds. Skatole can therefore be used to give jasmine, orange blossom, tuberose and other white-floral accords greater naturalism and depth.

Its role is generally not to smell like the finished perfume itself. Instead, Skatole acts as a character enhancer, adding warmth, sensuality and complexity to floral compositions. It can also be useful in animalic, narcotic and exotic fragrance concepts.

Because of its extreme potency, Skatole should be handled at very high dilution. A tiny amount can dramatically change an accord, while excessive use can quickly produce an overpowering animalic or fecal effect.

Perfumers' Tip

Skatole is a trace-level specialist material. It can make a white-floral accord feel much more natural and sensual when used correctly. Prepare an extremely dilute solution before evaluation and add it drop by drop. If the animalic or fecal character becomes obvious, the dosage is generally too high for a conventional floral accord.
